My Weight Loss Journey – from Fat to Fit
Having lost nearly 41 lbs (18.6 kg) of weight in the past four months, by maintaining a simple, easy-to-follow and fun diet plan - the one that utilizes good fat as the main source of energy instead of carbohydrates. The working principle behind such diet is that when one consumes small portions of carbohydrates and focuses more on proteins and fats, one’s body doesn’t push one to eat as often as it used to when its main source of energy was carbohydrates, instead now, it uses the fats to satisfy the hunger and keep one active for prolonged periods of time. In October 2019, my weighing scale showed my measurement to be 231 lb (105 kg). I was getting ready to attend a fancy-dress function at my kid’s (Clark’s) school in which he too was participating. I was trying a few over-sized outfits that I had my tailor custom make for me a year ago. To my unpleasant surprise, I realized that their fittings too had grown tight for my body size. A stark reality hit me that I had put on more weight in the past year! Somehow, I managed to find something to wear and rushed to my kid’s school. Upon reaching there, I saw mothers the kids of whom studied with my kid and they appeared half their age. Some of them looked splendid in those tight-fitting jeans and long boots, some with long skirts. They had a figure to die for!
I already was unsure of myself and my physique, but seeing those pretty ladies made me feel even worse. I got a few eyeballs as I hurried to my kid’s classroom and I was aware that those eyeballs were for my excessive weight. Once I reached my kid’s classroom, some kids who didn’t know me as Clark’s mother mistook me as someone participating in their competition and asked me what costume I was wearing to enhance my body fat. I could clearly see the embarrassment in my son’s eyes.
Once the event got over and we headed back to our home, I locked myself in my room and cried for what I had done to myself and my physique. My unhealthy eating habits and lack of food intake regulation had made me an outcast. I felt immense guilt for what I had done to myself over a period of years. I felt bad for my husband and my kid for me having been so casual about my growing obesity. I realized that it was high time and I need to change for the good. That very day, that very moment I pledged to myself that I would actively work towards losing the excess fat that I am carrying all over my body - belly, thighs, arms, face, etc.
I began with referring to the advice of few weight loss gurus available on YouTube. One channel that I rigorously followed asked its viewers to consume only salad and fruits as meals with very small servings of milk or eggs in the entire day. Though I had few apprehensions about such diet plan, I tried to follow this strategy. Over the period of days, I realized that by the end of each day I was extremely fatigued and irritable. Upon much analysis, I figured out that the primary cause for this was that I had consumed little to no carbohydrates and fats in the day - two main sources of energy and was thus having very low blood sugar levels, which caused the tiredness. I stopped following his advice and decided to seek advice from other weight loss specialists. Another weight loss guru advised his viewers to consume only one meal a day - heavily rich in carbohydrates, proteins and fats and to skip all the other meals. I followed this strategy for about a month and yet I witnessed no downward changes in my weight and body fat percentage.
Over the time, I realized that YouTube being a ‘free and open for all’ community attracts lots of creators who are considering to make a quick buck and majority of such fitness gurus were only running their business - their channel. Content quality of such tutorials is questionable and lacks any professional wisdom. Hence, I decided to search for other resources. My search began again. On advice of few of my friends, I followed the teachings of some blog writers that specialize in weight/fat loss. I rigorously followed each and every piece of advice they offered from diet to day schedule to exercise to sleep times and duration, yet I saw negligible changes in my shape two months later.
Completely demotivated and unenthusiastic about trying another guru only to be faced with the same fate, I left the hope of seeing myself in good shape again. Several months passed and I got occupied in my daily life with the idea of fat loss completely side lined. But then...
